English and the Internet

English has become one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. That could be seen as a great advantage for both communications and understanding, making it easir for people around the world to interact with each other. Nonetheless, the negative side is that it puts cultural diversity at great risk.

On avarage, 75% of the pages on the Internet are in English. With such a detail, it is surprising then that just 5% of the world's population are English native speakers. It means that only a few people can communicate well in English. Thus, with more and more people accessing the Web, and more and more companies using it to conduct e-business, the position of English has started to change.

It is obvious that customers prefer to purchase products online if they can order them in their own language. Consequently, companies with international expansion goals will have to translate their webpages if they want to approach their various clients.

And translation will certainly be a great problem that companies will have to face. The reason is that they cannot make use of the existing automated translation systems since they work with single-word translation.
